New song from 835, French electronica that is pretty cool. 835 did the coolest remix of Empire State Human's "Meloncholic Afro" and also just finished a remix of Leonard T's "Robot Afte All" that will blow your socks off. Will post that next week.

Tracks from Smash Hits

OK, so when Heaven 17 went to #6 on the Billboard Dance charts I felt like I had to celebrate it in some way. Also, about this time I had signed Melody & Mezzo and also gotten DJ Daz from the UK to lend me the "Woah Song". So I figured that I had the making of a very pop album.
Eh, not so much I guess. That is untilabout two months ago (it was originally released October 2007) Suddenly it is geeting downloads. Not sure why and I can not tell which songs yet, but maybe in this month's reports from our digital seller.

Anyway - I like the album, plenty of pop :-)

Leonard T- Ninthwave's newest release

OK
time to check out LEonard T, who comes to us all the way from Singapore. Leonard is an established pop star there but not known to too many here. We hope to change that :-)

Below are two songs from the debut release here - (a 21 track release!) that highlights the best from his first two Singapore albums.

If you like them, hop on over to www.ninthwaverecords.com and hear 5 more tracks.

First half of 2009 for Ninthwave

First Half of the Year

OK so the past two months were pretty good for Ninthwave – (these are all digital sales – yes we still sell Cds, but not many honestly).
June 09 –
Tracks – 22,918
Albums 96
Streams 795
Perm DL – 1986
“Controlled” 16

Not bad, Smile.dk drove a lot of that (half the album sales for example). “Controlled” means ringtones and some sort of college program called Rukus.

May was even better –
Tracks – 13, 270
Albums – 127
Streams 11.251
Perm 2119
Controlled – 27

A couple of things- even though total tracks in May were almost half of what was sold in June, permanent downloads, the ones where you pay 89 or 99 cents, were actually about 100 more. Streams are in some ways worthless. Example, in June I got paid for 795 streams, a low number, but what did I get paid?

$21.53 or $0.027 cents a stream. Compare that to about $0.65 cents (it varies, sometimes more, usually less) for the permanent downloads.

So even though June saw more tracks “sold” May was a better month.

By the way, all of these reports are a little skewed. Sometimes services pay every three months, so when Pandora pays it means a huge bump in tracks (streams) even though month to month the sales don’t change much. One day I will sort by month for 2008, it can take 6 months for all services to report sales (or longer sometimes).

So how are we doing this year to date? Glad you didn’t ask.

Jan- June 09
Tracks 34,687
Albums 589
Streams 25,491
Perm – 9298
Controlled – 487
Streams were about 73% of track sales. In June the are 34%, in May 84%. See what is going on here? The number of streams may change radically percentagewise, but because the payout is so small it doesn’t matter in some ways.
In 2008 the first half looked like this:

Tracks – 18,133
Albums 283
Streams – 12.473
Permanent – 5639
Controlled – 304

Streams about 69% of sales. Notice a few things – for 2009 streams are way up, doubled in fact. But perms are up too, about 40% (eyeballing it). Album sales almost doubled too. So sales in real terms are up 40%, but streams are up 50%.

Now this is a sample of one, so pretty much useless and there are some confounding factors – the Smile.dk album and track sales may explain most/all of the bump. But it is interesting to see that streaming is picking up steam.

How are we compared to 2008?

2008 total year
Track – 41.569
Albums 613
Streams 29.819
Perm 11,643
Controlled 720
Streams were 71%

So far in 2009 (50% done) we have sold

83% of 2008 Tracks
96% of 2008 albums
80% of 2008 Permanent downloads

Wow, pretty good.

Four for the Weekend

Hi folks
As part of my retrospective of ten years with Ninthwave I am posting a series of MPs here, today three for the weekend.

First up- one of my all time favorite songs ever, from anyone-
Astromill's Stranded in Manchester.

It is off Electricity 2 - the First Electricity was one of the early Cds Ninthwave put out, so E2 seemed like a natural thing to follow up with. I pressed up 1000, gave away about 400 of those to bands and the press and sold the other 600. I haven;t had copies to sell in about 4 years now, one of the few Cds we ever sold out of. I have never done a re-press, as a double CD it was exspensive, but people still pick it up digitally. The second disc onthe set features tracks from the first dozen or so Ninthwave releases, so it is a nice set to have :-)

The other set I wanted to highlight today was a remix collection from Qubiq.
Qubiq Remix Vol. 1 - Expanded Edition

Qubiq came to Ninthwave with some remixes for Empire State Human, but he really saved the day with a "tribal" remix of Heaven 17's "Hands up to Heaven" which was a good enough mix (a great mix!) that DJs began playing the song, eventually charting it. I got Qubiq to do a lot more mixes and he always delivers great stuff. The three here are:
"Dreams in the Mirror -Empire State Human" A great, powerful dance mix.
"New Man - Sonic Hub Fea. Martin Fry" The song was great, I loved it, but DJs were scared by the guitar, so Qubiq played up the synths and turned it into a great house style mix.
"Apollo - Empire State Human" Another remix he did for ESH, Apollo was a fan favorite, but Qubiq found a dance tune in the song and turned out a really slamming tribal take on the song.

If you like these mixes you should love the whole thing, plus it's pretty dirt cheap, under $6 on iTunes....

Next Week - more various artist sets....
