Bubblegum for Christmas

Now that Smile.dk is selling, I am beginging to be aware of a ton of music out there called "Bubblegum." Not you Ohio Fruit company or "Yummy Yummy" tytpe from the late 60s, but a new type- a 90s sound that Aqua perfected ("BArbie Girl")
Now there is even a Christmas album of the stuff - note the West End Girls cover of the PSB classic "Snow At Christmas" (btw- the gals verison is pretty awful, and I like them!)
Anyway

Listen, if you dare, to this clip from Crispy - It has all the world of Bubblegum- great melody, nice singing and, wait for it! Bad Germanic Rap!

G'N'R, Qubiq

I am listening to the stream o f the new Guns N Roses album on Mysapce
I know, I know - but it is part of my musicial DNA, I grew upon "Welcome to the Jungle." The first two songs SUCK! But after that, it gets, well, good actually. I could listen to it on the radio ( more than another round of "Open Arms").

Yeah, I'm crazy.

Qubiq's new remix album is popping up on Blog o land :

JVC says No No

JVC Japan (is that redundant?) passed on the Smile.dk album, but may hook us up on the import side. I think that will be for the best really.

IODA, our digital distro guys highlighted the new Qubiq Remix set in their weekly Dance music newsletter. Very cool!

This week in screw ups

OK
So the newly expanded Qubiq Remixes set is up on eMusic and most likely up on iTunes soon. Huh? I forgot to tell you? Well, it struck me that I really hated the old artwork for the “first” Qubiq Remix set and so I threw on some more mixes I had from him and walla! A newly expanded set. I figure if Rhianna can do it… Plus, no one (I mean NO ONE!) ever actually bought the entire original album release. Hopefully now they will since it will be a bargain, a whole 2 hours of mixes for one low price.

eMusic is quick when they want. They already posted my latest brain fart but still no sign of Smile.dk. I am trying to get out a new ESH single they did with Wolfgang Flur from Kraftewerk. Somehow I sent out a CD with another song on it. I figured it out before our Digital service sent it too far, but eMusic still managed to get it out.

A fix is being worked on now, but still…

Speaking of Smile.dk, I finally got word to release a remix single for “Doki Doki” from their new album. By the way, the Cd is about to be top ten on our all time best selling Amazon CDs. Not to shabby considering we don’t sell nearly as many Cds on amazon as we used too.

Some Qubiq to tide you over.

Gary Flanagan's back!

Way back when Ninthwave was just a bedroom label (as opposed to the multinational bemoth it is today) I heard a bunch of songs from this guy, Gary Flanagan, out of Canada. It was rinky sounding, but honest and catchy in it own way. He was gracious enough to lalow me ot press up some Cdr's of his debut and follow up. It eventually led to Ganymede finding out about ninthwave (they LOVE Gary's stuff- so much they produced and released his thrid album on Cohaagen).

anyway, he has two new albums out this week (!) Check him out if yo ulike your music cireca 1981. Maybe I'll even dig out those first two albums and try to get them up on iTunes.

Here's his email I got today -
"Hello folks! I just wanted to let you all know some very exciting news. My two brand new albums "Damariscotta" and "Europe" are ready to be unleashed upon the world. I'm very proud of both of these albums. They are both very different from one another.

"Damariscotta" is polished, clockwork synthpop. It is very heavily influenced by Vince Clarke. If you like Yazoo, Early Depeche Mode or Erasure, you will enjoy this album, I guarantee. You'll also like this if you are a fan of Human League, OMD, Kraftwerk, or any of those other classic synth bands. This one is very catchy and very hummable. A total New Wave party ripped right out of 1981. :)

"Europe" is a dramatic about-face to everything I said about "Damariscotta". It is raw, edgy, primitive and dark. Lots of buzzing synths and stiff beatboxes. This one falls under the "minimal wave" genre, and it also has touches of EBM and goth. It is my love letter to a continent I have never been to. This one was influenced by early Cabaret Voltaire, Martin Dupont, Thomas Leer, Robert Rental, Vice Versa, Fad Gadget, Visage, Gary Numan, etc.

Both albums can now be ordered through Paypal on my MySpace page (off to the right) or on the home page of my website:

Day Just Made- New Heaven 17!

OMG! Brand new Heaven 17, sort of. New mixes, some really old songs and at least one unreleased gem. Amazon has the download and samples, GO NOW AND LISTEN.
Plus, yes, you can buy a CD here-
http://www.justmusic.co.uk/store/TAO028/

Fromwhat I can hear it sounds like they have really funked up the songs for the tour (I think some of these are the new backing tracks they will play this Nov and Dec in the UK)

1. Being Boiled
2. Geisha Boys And Temple Girls
3. Temptation (featuring Billie Godfrey)
4. Penthouse And Pavement
5. Party Fears Two
6. Don’t Fall
7. (We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang
8. We Live So Fast
9. Empire State Human

Oh boy! So very cool!
:-)

I want the next ESh video to be like this

great news for friends of Ninthwave!

Thought Criminals, a great UK band, who Ninthwave "helped" by putting their debut, self released CD up on amazon last year landed a deal with a legit and proper label.
THE THOUGHT CRIMINALS - DIE YOUNG STAY PRETTY
(US 17 TRACK EDITION)
A WTII RECORDS (WAX TRAX!) RELEASE. WTII CD 051
INCLUDE'S 7 UNRELEASED BONUS REMIXES

The band can be pretty, uh, raunchy, so it is probably NSFW, but it sounds good turned up loud or ina club ihmo.

Why iTunes matters

The reason I get so worked up over itunes and their "take forever to put up stuff" approach is that even in a slow month they account for 75% of ninthwave's sales.

Anyway, as promised here are the last 8 weeks of sales (through 11/8) on itunes. comments below

(click on image to get a big, readable, version)

Some notes:

Smile.dk has really zoomed off for us. Already they are one of our top ten sellers ever on Amazon and after Heaven 17 our biggest seller ever on iTunes - well, ok, maybe Spray has more sales over all.

Melody and Mezzo have also been steady - hmm, Spray, Smile.dk and M&M, all on the DDR video game series.

Samplers do well for us too - people like to hear variety. I guess I should rustle up a new one soon.

Three years ago Empire State Human sold over 1000 downloads of "Halloween" this year I think they moved about 3. Wow. I guess everyone found that there are many version of that song out there.

Some of the slow sellers make me sad. I wish more people would discover The Peoples or Astromill, or even no shows on the list like Alan Replica (who sells CDs, oddly enough).

Feedback welcomed!

Why is itunes so slow?

OK, so amazon got the "new" Heaven 17 single Nov 10 (that would be, um, yesterday!) and...
wa-la

Now itunes got the same file, etc, October 28 and...
uh, still no sign of it on iTunes...

Oh well. Not much is selling on iTunes. Later today I will put up some iTunes sales figures for Ninthwave for the past 8 weeks, you can see for yourself :-(

Misc this week- OMD, Cuban Boys

Well, I will be away the rest of the week so I thought I would do some quick bullets here-
Synthetic Dance keeps growing, added Emotiquon and picked up an brand new cuban boys track (!) that is great. It's a disco cover of Swedish Rhapsody -"Midsommarvaka "(a nice classical bit of music)

Look for a greatly expanded Qubiq remixes set and all new cover art.

Oglio is going to put the OMD cover set back up online (I took it down since I had run out of my royalty license). Stay tuned for that.

The new Empire State Human single is just about ready to pop up - it sounds great :-)

See you next week.
