Overwerk "the Nth*"

OK, first of all its "the Nth [degree] but I could not find the degree symbol right away and just gave up. The debut ep is here: https://www.facebook.com/overwerk and you can listen to it all the way through and then pay what you want for it. It's worth at least a listen, bass heavy, square wave heavy, chopped up electro. In short, everything I like.

The Black Keys - Lonely Boy

180 huh? Love this rave up from The Black Keys with Modest Mouse. The video is ehh, I mean I get it, we're suppose to both laugh with and at the middle age dude lipsynching, but honestly, how many of us middle age dudes have NOT done this at home when everyone is out. No one? Oh... well... me neither you know.

Gina Lily "Deliver Me"

OK, so today I do a search on iTunes to see if the new Cotton & Gin single "Traveling and Folding" is up. I put in "Folding Gin" boom, nope, not up yet (grrrr). But this album does pop up by Gina Lily (the "gin" part I guess) - looks homemmade. The copyright is Gina Lily, so I guess it is. Eh, worth a chuckle to click on a song to see how bad it is. Holy FLurkin Snit, it's not only not bad, it is actually quite good! "Monsoon" ht me first, but all the tracks are really well done, good songwriting, well produced. Ms. Lily's voice is somewhat borderline to be honest, but she makes it work really well. It reminds me of a lot fo stuff from the early 1990s like Toni Childs, Julia Fordham etc- this is not polished autotuned pop, this is real, somewhat earthy, pop music. I am lovin this record and I have no idea who this person is. Its a shame really, she's not hooking up with will.i.am (not this record anyway) or releasing a sex tape, so I guess she'll never really get noticed. Too bad. this is the kind of record A&M or Elektra would have put out. If yo uknow what I mean then you know that this is a good, well done record that will sink beneath the waves without a trace. Sigh.

SuperHeavy

Funy enough, this weekend was listening to a mix with Asia in it- remember them? They were a super group- what ever happened to such things?

Well.... Check out Mick Jagger 's pink suit, Joss Stone, Dave Stewart getting a tattoo, Damian Marley DJ’ing and A.R. Rahman in the limo.

I like the song well enough, but it kinda seems a little Reggae lite- esp compared to say recent stuff from Mark Ronson.

Still, not bad. Best stuff from any of them sepratley since about 1995 :-)

Tom Waits Sings Cookie Monster sings Tom Waits

One of those Sesame Stret sync videos, well done. I know I might get sh$t for this, but I have never "gotten" Waits, I always thought of him as one of pop music's supreme posers, doing sthick and trying to sell it as serious art.

Now I am sure. lol

New Kyle Brylin, New Aidan Casserly

Two new Ninthwave releases to tell you about this week

Kyle Brylin “Everything I’m Missing” b/w “Make It So”
Two hot new songs from Kyle, including the previously locked away “Make It So.” Kyle has been on fire lately, popping up on “Melanie LaPatin presents Ballroom Remixed” where his song “I’m a Man, Not A Piece of Meat” caught a lot of people’s attention (it’s the best selling song off the album btw). His cover of Rihanna’s “S&M” struck more than a few as being much better than even the original.
So now we have two new songs from Kyle, written and produced entirely by Mr. Brylin himself. Keep your eye on this one, lots of great stuff coming out over this long, hot, summer!
Follow @kylebrylin on twitter.

Aidan Casserly- Naming of Blue
AIDAN CASSERLY - "THE NAMING OF BLUE" (2011 FOR NEVILLE CASSERLY)
01 CLOAK & DAGGERS: OVERTURE
02 WE'RE NO SINNERS
03 SEPIA YEARS
04 STEAL FOR LOVE
05 BOY SONG (FOR BILLY MACKENZIE)
06 SILENT SONGS
07 RIVER OF SOULS
08 SEBASTIAN AND THE DREAM
09 MARBLE
10 CASTLES (FEATURING MARTIN WATKINS)
11 CLOAK & DAGGERS: OUTRO

"The naming of Blue" (from a poem title by Cathal Casserly) is the 2nd solo album from Irish singer/songwriter Aidan Casserly (noted and respected lead singer from both Empire State Human and The Garland Cult).
Released in 2011 on Ninthwave Records, "The naming of Blue" is especially dedicated to Aidan's dear brother Neville who passed away in Oct 2010, after a long and brave battle with throat cancer and who is sorely missed by all his family and friends.
This is the follow up to "White Soul" (2009) and whereas "White Soul" was purely acoustic, "The naming of Blue" mixes orchestral, pop, ballad, electro, torch song, rock and ambient music elements, to create an ambitiously moving and emotional collection of personal songs, but also songs which really shines and stand out on first listen.
The album features a song called "Castles" co-written with pianist Martin Watkins, who is famous for his piano and keyboard work with the legendary Marc Almond. The album also feature's Aidan's touching tribute to the late and great lead singer of The Assoicates Billy Mackenzie, with the song "Boy Song (for Billy Mackenzie)".
Maybe this is the album Aidan was born to record afterall ..... and with over 200+ Aidan Casserly related tracks currently now on iTunes since 2002 alone (Empire State Human, The Garland Cult & Figaro), that's quite a musical journey indeed.
Here's a simple promo video to a song from the album "Steal for Love" which many feel has 'a hit single' written all over it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMvrLTSmbHU

To keep up to date on all Aidan Casserly related video's check out the channel www.youtube.com/aidancasserly 94 video's now up, with more to follow from his back catelogue.

Empire State Human live June 3rd!

From the band:
Dear friends,

We're excited to confirm that we'll be performing live on Friday June
3rd @ The Mezz, Temple Bar
here in Dublin. We're on the bill with the very talented Tiny Magnetic
Pets and Eden are headlining.
Doors 7:30pm. €5 admission and we go on at 8:20pm. This is a fund
raiser for Crumlin's Children's Hospital
so it's well worth coming along, supporting that cause and seeing 3
pretty cool synth bands live ... and in Dublin
too!

We'll be performing songs from the upcoming new ESH album "The Art" as
well as some tracks from our debut album
"Pop Robot" and a special cover too!!!

Synth bands are pretty thin on the ground in Dublin, so it's fairly
rare to get three on the same bill ... who knows
maybe Queen Elizabeth will come along too!!!! Thanks to Danny King for
the (attached) flyer .... a true supporter
of pure synthpop and of the scene in Ireland for many years ....

Here's us performing "Camera" @ The Button Factory from July 2009 ...

Kind regards,

Aidan & Lar

Wiley - Numbers in Action

Electroluvs " Boy Don't Bother"

Strange but true. I love the Electroluvs- one of my biggest dissapointments is that Ninthwave could not make them "work" out better. I wished big things for them.

A few days ago Billy from th eband found this video- for a remix of Boy Don;t Bother. The video is "fan made" but honestly better than 99% of "professional" vids out there.
Simply too cool

Tuesday, March 22, 2011

George Michael "True Faith"

Why do I like this? What is wrong with me? Although I have to say, in the end, it would have been cooler if:
1. George stopped the autotune at some point
2. Broke midway through into something  abit more up tempo. Enough with the Easy Listening George - Just 'cause you're over 40 doesn;t mean you're dead.

"Bob" Dylan sings "Friday"

If you get this, then god help you.

Another song from the Car, this one a bit better

Blue Tip by The Cars - even more retro, but when that killer sawtooth synth kicks in o nthe chorus I am taken back to 1981....

New music from The Cars - Sad Song

Yes, Ric Ocasik is back in the fold. Too bad Benjamin Orr is not, RIP.
not a bad song, if it had come out in 1985.

Wednesday, March 16, 2011

LMFAO - I Love the video (please, help me!!!!!)

I am just plain old morally opposed to LMFAO- but you can not deny a great video and pretty decent dance tune (done to death and done better by Dave Gueterra, but hey)

Monday, February 21, 2011

Human League "Credo"

No, I have not heard the whole album, but I did go to Juno and hear snippets. I couldn't get past the first 90 seconds -- I think it was the autotune that did it for me. Of all the bands whose out of tune vocals actually mattered the most, it was HL. The flat vocals MADE them unique, interesting. Now they just sound like every other piece of crap out there.
Not well done people.

label update

Ok
Well, this blog was originally about me running Ninthwave records- into the ground… (thankyouverymuch! I’ll be here all week! Tip your Waitress!). But I haven’t written too much lately because things have been slow and I have not bothered.
Here goes

Kyle Brylin – single out now. Kyle was brought to me by Charlie Mason – a guy who has an INCREDIBLE ear for hot pop – just the kind I like. Charlie put together mixes and even an amazing video. We’re spending 4 figures on promotion (gulp!) because we both think this will be the start of something great. We’ll see. Most days I feel like we’re just suckers, lol. [psssst- it mights be that the song ends up on ABC TV somewheres, stay tuned.

Empire State Human/Aidan Casserly/Etc. Aidan is sending me a second solo album, released a GREAT ESH single before Christmas and now says he will get me a new ESH album (“Art”) this year. When does the guy sleep?

I have been talking to Van Go Lion about releasing an EP. I hope, I hope, I hope they get back to me, I love their stuff (check out Sugarblush below).

Leonard (aka Starfunk) just sent me a great new CD under the Starfunk name- it is the kind of album George Michael should be making. In fact if GM just recorded his vocals over this album it would be his comeback album. Instead Leonard is allowing me to release it here in the US. Happy day!

Cotton and Gin did something kinda stupid yesterday. It’ll pop up on iTunes in the next 1247 hours. Ugh, hope it works.

Hey, anybody have one of the Original Gary Flanagan CDrs? Gary says his doesn’t work anymore- I have the mp3 files but am curious.

I sent two huge boxes of Cds to Tommy at DSBP so he can send them out to college radio. I figure why not. Cd sales have all but flat-lined. Amazon sells 2-8 a month for me now. It is a vicious circle- I am reluctant to press up cds, so of course I sell less ( or none).

another exciting release - Paul Rutherford's solo album reissued

· Lead track is the acid house anthem Get Real, which - like Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Relax - received an airplay ban from the BBC.

happy new year! Dark Dark Dark "In your Dreams"

Oh wow, ok, 2011, etc.

Here is a nifty slice of folk pop that reminds me (just a LITTLE) of MArina and the Diamonds, Florence and Machine etc.

I love it myself I do :-)

gotta dig those hipster glasses ( and the guy's hat). Ahhh fashion.
imho the album version is better - the drums sound better, reminds me of Funboy Three.
