Merry Christmas!

Or Happy Holidays if so inclined. Winter Solstice is Dec. 21 folks!)
Ninthwave and some of our favorite people have joined up to offer a humble little Christmas EP of fun electronic music. Best of all it is free! Our gift to you as a way of thanking you for helping us stay barely afloat this year.

The EP features Empire State Human (by themselves and help from the always wonder Mr. Wave In Head), The Garland Cult, Hyperbubble and a track we nabbed (with permission!) from Cosmicity.

If so moved (and you have any money left these days) after listening to these pleasant tunes, please consider donating to your favorite charity.

Thanks for all the bands and to Bobby Clark for his help.

PS- Please forward this to as many people as you care to.

past 12 months, in a nut shell

Ninthwave Oct 07 – Oct 08 Report

(does not really match up date wise, I am still waiting for some September sales, and even though I have “October” sales, that’s really August and September due to the delay in reporting. )

Anyway.

Digital sales.

First off, as a way of comparing – from Oct to Oct I shipped 1457 CDs. Most of those sold or will sell.

So-

552 digital albums were sold.

44,169 tracks.

Now before we get all excited –
33,601 of those were streams, for which we get often a penny or less for.

10,568 were downloads, which we get 50 cents on up for.

Yeah, do the math. Just know , as a frame of reference – the deal we did for Heaven 17 that got them on HBO’s True Blood was for more than all our Digital and CDs sales for the past 12 months combined. Perspective huh?

If one does the “industry standard” thing and divide the tracks by 10 (as in 10 songs to an album, not sure if ANY CD we’ve released has just 10 songs on it) you get about 1050.

So basically I “sold” about 1600 digital albums worth of stuff. Or just a little bit more than actual Cds I sold. So say a 50/50 split.

This isn’t revenue, I haven’t figured that out yet. But still interesting.

Here are some other highlights-

254 tracks were sold as ring tones. Many in Canada. Hmmm…

Top ten selling Digital albums (just album sales, not track)

1. Melody & Mezzo “Nightshade” remix EP
2. Matinee Club – the Modern LP
3. Melody & Mezzo “ I Wanna Be Your Star” Remix EP
[After here sales drop off pretty stteply]
4. Smile.dk –Party Around the World (this reflects only a few of their sales so far)
5. Spray – Children of a Laser God
6. Heaven 17 “Hands up To Heaven – Qubiq Mixes” (You have to buy the “album” to get either of these two mixes).
7. -9. Tie
a. Heaven 17 “Hands up to Heaven DJ Mixes”
b. Spray - Living In Neon
c. NASA –Remembering the Future
10. -12 Tie
a. Various – Electricity 3
b. Sonic Hub “New Man” single
c. Spray “I Am Gothic Remix Project”
btw- the last three sold 11 copies each, so we’re not talking huge sales.

OK
Here are the top selling tracks (digital, all types of downloads, including all those many streams. One day I might sort them out but I am going cross-eyed already. The count is simply all versions of the song, so those with lots of remixes (Heaven 17! Melidy & Mezzo) have all remixes just counted as the song selling. Clear?

1 Hands Up To Heaven (twice as many as the next song)
2 Don’t Fear The Reaper
3 I'm gonna Make You Fall In Love With Me
4 I Am Gothic
5 Run With Us
6 I Want To Be Your Star
7 Night shade
8 Whenever I say Hello
9 Woah Song

64 Anthem for the Modern Artist
65 Neon Rain

67 Gale Winds
68 Are You Falling In Love Again?
69 Before You Go

After that all songs sold less than 100 downloads/streams.
Some notes – “Hand on the Gun” included both the Figaro and ESH versions.
Had all the sales of Spray’s “He Came with the Frame/Sleigh” been combined it would have been top twenty.

Tracks from well known artists on our various artists sets sell well (no surprise)

Top selling artists based on # of tracks (again, this is all kinds of tracks)

1 Heaven 17 (just over 26% of all track sales)
2 Spray (about 17% of all sales)
3 Aidan Casserly*
4 Empire State Human
5 Melody & Mezzo
6 White Town
7 Alan Replica
8 Matinee club(The Modern)
9 Freezepop
10 NASA
11 DJ Daz
12 Xero G
13 Astromill
14 Mark Nicholas*
15 The Garland Cult
16 Macondo
17 Space March
18 Soviet
19 Ganymede
20 Electroluvs
21 Synthetik FM
22 Fr/action
23 Raindancer

Yeah, 43% of all track sales come from two bands.

About Mark Nicholas – I combined the stuff from him, Cosmicity and uh, Turd Furguson. Because.
Aidan Casserly –He’s the thread between ESH, The Garland Cult and Figaro. He accounts for 10% of all sales.

I think it is great to see how well Alan Replica does here despite the fact he does not have a single song that sells really well – he sells across the board. Cool.

Well, ok, my head is spinning. I need to get out that Spray CD stat! And seriously try to get out the Alan Replica CD…

new Burial, sort of

My own personal Record of the Year, Burial's Untrue, is stuck on my ipod repeat list. You MUST find a way to listen to this. It is probably the first record since DJ shadow's debut or even PRetty Hate MAchine that has really opened my mind up in a new way.
Meanwhile Mr. Burial has released (or will soon) a DJ Kicks set. These are a mixed bag, the series asks DJs to pick out songs, do a mix set. Sometimes you get good stuff, often it seems people pick stuff to impress the critics. I have a good feeling about Mr. Burial.

Just saying

totally off topic, but this is kinda scary...
(love the show btw, watch all the seasosn, but wow, now with eyes wide open)

The top shot (Yellow bandana) is a screen shot from Episode 9, the bottom shot is supposed to be from episode 12, a few days later....

IGMYFILWM

Heaven 17's "I'm gonna Make You Fall In Love With Me" The great single that never was (but was, really).
I lucked out with "Hands Up To Heaven" - the first single from Before/After- I got some super remixes and got a NYC club promoter to push the record. We made #6 on billboard. So I got very excited about what I considered to be a sure fire follow up, IGMYFILWM. I go some UK remixers, got Qubiq back, pressed up full color sleeve singles... and...
Well, the NYC club promoter wanted some more mixes, but I had already spent about $3000 on remixes and pressing, Ihad no more money (plus his fee would have just been even more $$$). So it kinda sat there.
Sold well as a single on Amazon for a while (the band has a lot of fans!)

But over the past four weeks sales have steadily climed on iTunes. Nothing huge, just from say 5 a week to 40 in the past week.

And now Qubiq fantasic Radio Mix is #8 on iTunes ' Heaven 17 list.

So somewhere, someone is spinning the mixes, finally! Maybe people have moved on from "Don't Fear the Reaper" (still the biggest choice for people at iTunes). I haveno idea.

This is what can be very frustrating - I would love to say it was some master stroke of marketing, but it is more from meglect. And even if I figured it out, there is no way to know if it really would work- sales might fall off a cliff next week. Christmas tends to change people's spending habits, from themselves to others. (Funny how that works).

Hmm, wonder who these buggers ARE?

Amazon.uk offers Ninthwave MP3s now

Just in Today (or maybe yesterday) is the new Amazon.co.uk MP3 store, which has the full line of Ninthwave releases (well most of them, not all are available from us in the UK)

More news today about another ninthwave band about possible tour plans that I can't talk about yet, but it would be a biggie.

Stay tuned.

Super Tuesday

When I started this blog I wanted tobe pretty transperant with what was going on at the label. But,... sometimes I just can't tell everything even though I am bursting at the seams today. Here's what is in the rumour mill - possibly licensing one and maybe two ninthwave releases in some Asian countries, outisde chance that there will be a tour there too for at least one band, maybe a UK deal for another on a major UK indie (but no names yet because chances are it might not happen), word that a major US magazine was asking about profiling one of the bands...
Ugh! All this from 9 am to 12 noon today. It's almost too much for my little pea head to take in!
What I can tell you is that IODA took in a new remix single from Smile.dk and we should get that processed today or tomorrow and then they will zip it to the digital services.
Oh, and I got in the "Hard Times" promo Cd and will ship them today to Todd at A different Drum....

Matinee Club is dead, long live The Modern!

Got an unexpected (but very exciting!) email today from Chi of the Modern-

We are now with an indie label over here, Pie and Mash Recordings, and have decided to go back to being called The Modern.
We were never comfortable being Matinee Club.
Also we have got Rees back in the band drumming.
He used to be in the band with us, we grew up together, but his other band Dirty Vegas did a world tour and we lost him for a couple of years.
Now he's back for good.

Anyway we have had a great response to The Modern returning and sold out our first gig and we play the Astoria with I AM X on saturday which I also believe has sold out.

The second album is sounding great"

Wow. :-)

Out Today - new Heaven 17

I downloaded this from emusic today and wow, very nice! I love the new version of Beng Boiled. And the new stuff is very nice, especially "Party Fears Two" . Glen's voice is great and it sounds like his wonderful stuff from the first BEF collection (his "Witchita Lineman" is a all time classic reading of the song).

All in all a nice little Christmas gift from the band. Not going to change the world but it makes me happy.
