New York metropolitan area pop group Nova Social expands their sonic palette with their new self-titled EP, mating their ambitious pop songwriting with electronic and dance music influences. The new EP includes six rhythmically-and-lyrically-driven songs in the vein of perfect '80s new wave and recent DFA Records releases. Violins and violas sizzle with frenetic '70s disco and orchestral pop-inflected arrangements, while Nile Rodgers-meets-Robert Fripp guitar playing grooves and unsettles.

I like it, good pop sound but electronic. :-)

Dragonette

A little something different - I am now going to feature more than just Ninthwave music...

I loved their last album (see below) and really like this new track... reminds me of the Modern...

Sorbara and Kurtz met at a music festival and formed a duo named The Fuzz, making music together in their basement recording studio for fun. The duo formed Dragonette after these initial recordings, and supported New Order on only their second live performance. In 2005, the band released the Dragonette EP, prior to signing a record deal with Mercury/Universal.

Dragonette relocated to London to record debut album Galore, and toured the UK supporting local acts, including Basement Jaxx and Sugababes and played headline gigs in small venues across the UK and Canada. British musician Will Stapleton replaced Simon Craig on guitar following the relocation. Dragonette filmed two music videos, one "Jesus Doesn't Love Me" and another for "I Get Around". The former video leaked onto the internet, while the other served as promotion for their first single release. Despite the promotion from the band, "I Get Around" entered the UK singles chart at #92, disappointing the band members. A further single release, "Take It Like a Man" fared no better, not even reaching the Top 100 on the UK Singles chart. Dragonette did however receive some airplay of a cover of Calvin Harris' hit single "The Girls", which was re-titled as "The Boys". "I Get Around" was released in the band's home country of Canada where it outperformed the UK release, peaking at #57.

So after "Living In Neon" came out people began to ask more and more about "I Am Gothic." It got airplay and club play and Ric from Spray had a this remix... plus a few new songs...

The genius that is Spray

What can I say about Spray except - wow. When I first popped in their demo (thanks Todd!) I was blown away by the production, the melodies, the singing. It sounded like, well, like a pop record - in the best sense of the word.

So then, this is Spray week, with a very special surprise for Friday (hint - demo!)

First up are selections from Living in Neon - the band's debut album. For the full Spray story we head over to Spray Central:

In 1999, Ric and Jenny took a whirlwind rollercoaster ride from making home demos on a 4-track to hanging out with Steps and S Club 7 at the Xmas Top Of The Pops studio. This was as part of the top 5 million-selling hit success of 'The Hamsterdance Song' by the Cuban Boys, written and initially produced in a fit of boredom in Spray Studio that February. In 2000, however, the rollercoaster stalled a bit, and despite trying out conventional rock things like "gigging" and "making an album" the Cuban Boys vanished from the pop radar fairly rapidly and ironically. (nb: check out www.cubanboys.info for the revamped and revitalised Cubans)
